I’m a husband, father, grandfather, entrepreneur, and long-distance adventure cyclist. This epic adventure is a sabbatical that’s sure to have its ups and downs (literally and figuratively), and I’ll be documenting all of it along the way.
Lots of people have asked me why I am doing this. Did I lose my job? Did my business fail? Am I retiring? Am I trying to find myself? Am I trying to lose myself? And on it goes. The answer to all of those questions is “well, no.” First and foremost, I just want to go for a long ride.
I love an adventure, I love a challenge and rather than retire, which I have no intention of doing any time soon, why not go out for a refreshment. I’ve had a busy and successful career, I’ve remained married for 36 years, I’ve raised two kids and have four grandkids. Why not go out and just enjoy myself and live a reward well earned?! If I learn something along the way, all that much better. And really, I just want to go for a long ride.
I’ve also found a way to make this ride more than just about me. While I was preparing, I came across an non-profit organization called First Descents that I really believe in and so made the decision to leverage this ride to raise money for them. If I can make a difference for the beneficiaries of First Descents while on this adventure, all the better!
