Day 8: Lessons Come Back Around

[What a Difference A Day Makes]

Good afternoon!

I’m doing this video from Mitchell, Oregon. It was a 72 mile day, and only about 2,500 feet of climbing. The first 60 or so miles was straight uphill and the last 10 were screaming downhill, so it was fun.

I felt like crap the first part of the day, for about the first 50 miles. Maybe I didn’t eat enough. But I had some good carbs and felt a lot better ending the day.

Kevin did much better today, I think we might have solved some of his challenge – likely dehydration. He rode strong today. It was the most mileage we’ve done and the earliest we’ve arrived anywhere, which makes me feel happy.

You can see it’s a very beautiful location. We’re actually staying in a hostel tonight.

It’s amazing what a difference a day makes.

For me, it was a huge emotional recovery day. I had a great conversation with my wife and my children last night, who are phenomenal coaches in their own right, and they really helped me sort through what I was struggling with emotionally. Some stuff has come up relating all the way back to the first long ride I did with my daughter, which some of you know about.

Essentially, I am reliving that experience with Kevin, but I’m doing it well this time. I’m actually being patient and empathetic, and I’m doing what I desperately wish I could have done for my daughter then. So that’s actually been hard to grapple with – I can feel myself wanting to cry again – it’s been hard to look at how I didn’t take care of my daughter.

But I am also really pleased that I’m taking that lessons and that I’m able to be better for Kevin now.

So it was a good day. Tonight will be interesting, it’s the first hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Tomorrow we’re going to do a short day, and now there’s just two of us, so that changes the gamut.

It’s amazing, again, what a difference a day makes – coming over from the west side of Oregon soaking wet and now being in the dry side of Oregon, which is so much more like Colorado. My body feels really good other than a tired butt from sitting on the saddle all day.

I’m still loving where I’m at and what I’m doing, and I’m so grateful that I have this opportunity and that so many of you have given me the space to do this. Thank you, family, friends and clients for giving me the space to do this. I really appreciate it.

I hope you’re enjoying the ride. I know I continue to.
